In an effort to ensure the safety and security of festival-goers, local authorities have implemented a stringent ban on unauthorized drones flying over the Pukkelpop festival site in Kiewit, near Hasselt, Limburg. The initiative follows last year’s successful trial of a no-fly zone, which saw the detection of 69 drones illegally operating in the area.
Local police, equipped with specialized detection software developed by SkeyDrone, will be on high alert to identify and fine unlicensed drone operators. Dorien Baens, a member of the local police force, warned that fines for violators could reach up to €8,000.
“We realized that many amateur pilots wanted to capture images of Pukkelpop and other events in the region. That’s why we opted to set up a drone detection system,” explained Baens. The system, which was tested last year, proved effective in identifying unauthorized drones, prompting its reimplementation for this year’s festival.
Baens emphasized the potential dangers posed by drones flying over large gatherings. “A drone flying over a festival site can be very dangerous. If the pilot is inexperienced and/or lacks knowledge about piloting, things can go disastrously wrong. A drone falling from a significant height can be extremely dangerous to anyone below,” he said.
Beyond the immediate physical risks, there are concerns about drones being used for illicit purposes. “We also fear that drones could be used to smuggle drugs or weapons into the festival,” Baens added.
To enhance the enforcement of the no-fly zone, police will utilize the SkeyDrone software, which will automatically detect any drones entering the restricted area. The fines for operating unauthorized drones will be strictly imposed, with amounts varying but potentially reaching up to €8,000.
In addition to the drone ban, festival attendees will benefit from an innovative reporting system aimed at improving overall safety and security. QR codes will be strategically placed throughout the festival site, allowing attendees to report any issues directly to the police using their smartphones. This initiative is designed to provide real-time assistance and guidance based on the nature of the issues reported.
