Brussels is set to become Europe’s largest car-free zone once again on Sunday, September 22, as the Belgian capital celebrates its annual Car-Free Sunday.
This initiative, which forms the grand finale of the region’s Mobility Week, will see vehicles banned from the city streets for the entire day, from 09:00 to 19:30. The aim is to encourage sustainable transport and promote environmental awareness.
A Day Without Cars
On Car-Free Sunday, Brussels’ usually bustling streets will be transformed as cars make way for pedestrians, cyclists, rollerbladers, and other “vulnerable” road users.
The initiative, part of Brussels’ commitment to promoting alternative transportation methods, will see a significant shift in how people navigate the city.
STIB, Brussels’ public transport operator, will play a crucial role in this transformation. All STIB bus, tram, and metro lines will be free of charge for the entire day, providing residents and visitors with a cost-effective alternative to driving.
The public transport network will also experience increased service levels, with higher frequencies compared to a typical Sunday.
Enhanced Public Transport Services
STIB has announced several key enhancements to its services for Car-Free Sunday. The metro system, comprising four lines (1, 2, 5, and 6), will operate at a frequency of one metro every 6.5 minutes from 13:00 to 19:00.
During peak times at stations on common axes, a metro will arrive every 3 minutes and 15 seconds. Outside of these peak hours, metro services will follow the Saturday timetable, albeit with a slightly reduced frequency.
Trams will also see adjusted schedules to accommodate the increased demand. The tram lines will run according to the Saturday timetable, with added reinforcements on several lines.
Notably, lines 7 and 25 will see one tram every 7.5 minutes between 11:00 and 20:00, lines 8, 92, and 93 will have one tram every 10 minutes during the same period, and line 81 will feature one tram every 8 minutes from 10:00 to 20:00.
Buses will maintain their Saturday timetables, except for line 12, which will adhere to the Sunday schedule. Additionally, a free shuttle bus will operate between car park C and Heysel station from 09:30 to 20:00, further facilitating mobility across the city.
Increased Accessibility and Affordability
Travelling outside Brussels on Car-Free Sunday will also become more affordable. Belgian railway operator SNCB is once again offering its Mobility Ticket, allowing travelers across the country to purchase a return journey for just €8.
This initiative aims to make regional travel more accessible and encourage the use of public transport throughout Belgium.
A Focus on Sustainability
The Car-Free Sunday event aligns with the goals of Mobility Week, an initiative dedicated to fostering sustainable transport practices and reducing the environmental impact of travel.
By promoting walking, cycling, and the use of public transport, Brussels aims to showcase the benefits of alternative transportation and raise awareness about the importance of reducing car emissions.
This year’s Car-Free Sunday provides a unique opportunity for residents and visitors alike to experience the city from a different perspective.
With cars off the roads, the focus will shift to the diverse ways in which people can traverse the city while contributing to a more sustainable urban environment.
Community and Environmental Impact
The impact of Car-Free Sunday extends beyond mere transportation. The event serves as a platform for community engagement and environmental advocacy. By highlighting the benefits of reduced car use, Brussels hopes to inspire lasting changes in travel behavior among its residents.
As Brussels prepares for its largest car-free event of the year, the city invites everyone to participate and experience the benefits of a more pedestrian-friendly and environmentally conscious urban environment.
With increased public transport services and a range of alternative travel options available, Car-Free Sunday promises to be a significant and enjoyable event for all.
