Brussels, September 16, 2024 — Brussels’ public transport system is set for a major overhaul starting September 23, as public transport operator STIB unveils a series of significant updates to its network.
This transformation, timed just after the European Mobility Week and Car-free Sunday, aims to address the capital’s evolving mobility needs and enhance connectivity across the city.
Introduction of Tram Line 10
One of the most anticipated changes is the launch of Tram Line 10, which will commence operation on September 23.
This new tram line will create a crucial link between Neder-Over-Heembeek in the northern part of Brussels and Churchill in Uccle, passing through the city center.
Designed to offer a direct, high-capacity, and comfortable mode of transport, Tram Line 10 is expected to significantly benefit the residents of Neder-Over-Heembeek, local workers, and students traveling to northern Brussels.
The new line will connect seamlessly with multiple other transport options. Passengers will have access to various bus lines, including 47, 53, and 56, and will also be able to transfer to several tram lines (4, 7, 18, and 51), the metro (lines 1-5 and 2-6), and train services at both the North and Midi Stations.

Changes to Tram Line 3 and Introduction of Tram Line 35
The reorganization does not stop with Tram Line 10. Tram Line 3, which currently operates between Esplanade and Churchill, will merge with Tram Line 10 from Heembeek to Churchill. To accommodate the changes, a new tram line, Tram 35, will be introduced.
Tram 35 will provide service between Esplanade and Bienfaiteurs/Weldoeners, covering the portion of Line 3’s route that is not served by Tram 10.
This adjustment is expected to enhance service on key ring roads and alleviate congestion on busy routes.
Notably, the frequency of trams between Dockx Bruxsel and Meiser stops will double from ten to twenty per hour, addressing the crowded conditions during evening rush hours and significantly boosting capacity along the Boulevard Lambermont.
Bus Line Adjustments
The introduction of Tram Line 10 will also prompt changes to several bus lines. Specifically, Bus Lines 47 and 57 will be merged into a new Line 47.
This new line will connect Heembeek to Vilvorde Station and take over the route of the current Line 57 in Neder-Over-Heembeek, which serves industrial estates and the canal zone.
The central area of Neder-Over-Heembeek will be served by Tram Line 10, which will replace the section of Line 57 between NOH and the North Station.
Direct Connection with Extended Bus Line 46
In addition to these changes, STIB is extending Bus Line 46 starting September 23. This line, which currently connects Moortebeek (Anderlecht) with WTC-Glibert in the Northern Quarter, will now extend to Pannenhuis.
This extension will create a direct connection between Pannenhuis and Anderlecht via the city center, the Suzan Daniel Bridge, and the new districts of Tour & Taxis and Tivoli, where several schools are located.
Notably, Bus Line 46, along with Line 53, will be the first to feature the new articulated electric buses, marking a step towards greener public transport options.
Comprehensive Support Plan
Given the scale of the changes, STIB has developed an extensive support plan to assist passengers through the transition.
Staff will be stationed across the network on trams and buses affected by the changes, as well as at key stops, to answer questions and provide guidance.
This on-the-ground support aims to facilitate a smooth transition and help passengers navigate the new system.
In addition to direct assistance, STIB will enhance communication through various channels. Updates will be available on the STIB website, in its newsletter, through the STIB app, on social media, and via announcements at stations and in vehicles.
The new adjustments will also be integrated into the STIB journey planner to ensure passengers have up-to-date route information.
