Brussels, Belgium — Standing at the helm of the Corinthia Grand Hotel Astoria Brussels, Filip Boyen reflects on a career that spans four decades and five continents.
The Limburg native, now serving as the interim general manager of the only luxury hotel in Brussels, has built a legacy defined by resilience, charm, and an unyielding commitment to hospitality.
Once a high school dropout who started as a butcher, Boyen’s path to the top of the hospitality world was anything but conventional.
His journey began in Michelin-starred restaurants, where he honed his skills before managing some of the world’s most prestigious hotels.
“It is all about the human connection,” Boyen told The Brussels Times, emphasizing that while the opulent setting and steep prices attract the high-class clientele, it is the personal touch that keeps them coming back.
A Globetrotting Career
Boyen’s career has been marked by both challenges and triumphs across the globe. In Bora Bora, he witnessed his hotel devastated by a hurricane.
In South Africa, he navigated the complexities of managing multiple establishments during the tumultuous period following Nelson Mandela’s release from prison.
His time in Turkey coincided with the outbreak of the First Gulf War, causing a sharp decline in hotel attendance.
However, it was in Moscow between 1992 and 1997 that Boyen managed to leave a significant mark, hosting guests such as former Russian Presidents Mikhail Gorbachev and Boris Yeltsin.
“He was a very nice guy, a visionary,” Boyen recalled fondly of Gorbachev. His seven-year tenure in Peru remains a personal highlight. “It’s just a great place to be,” he said, describing the country’s culture, cuisine, and landscapes.
Building Connections Behind the Scenes
Boyen’s philosophy extends beyond ensuring an unforgettable stay for his guests. He is equally devoted to his staff, recognizing that the success of any hotel depends on those working behind the scenes.
“The people in the background are the ones making it all happen,” he explained, adding that managers must show appreciation for their teams.
During an interview, Boyen paused to exchange words in Russian with a junior chef and his wife, who were staying at the hotel for the night.
“It is important that everyone has the guest experience,” he noted, underscoring his belief that understanding the guest perspective enhances service quality.
A Discreet Clientele and a Historic Venue
Since its reopening in 2024 following a 17-year closure, the Corinthia Grand Hotel Astoria has quickly regained its stature as a symbol of luxury on Rue Royale.
The hotel’s history is adorned with notable guests, including Winston Churchill, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Salvador Dalí. Room rates start at €700, soaring to €21,000 for the most opulent suites.
Discretion is key at the Corinthia, with Boyen refusing to disclose the identities of the current high-profile guests. “Clients want to fly under the radar,” he said, hinting only that Heads of State and A-list celebrities are among the regular visitors.
Passion for Hospitality
Despite his impressive résumé, Boyen downplays his success. “Many of us started in the kitchen or at the front desk. I think this is the best way,” he remarked, attributing his rise to a mix of timing, luck, and seizing opportunities.
His passion for the industry remains undiminished. “This is the best job in the world,” he said with a smile, reflecting on the unique blend of travel, culture, and human connection that has defined his career.
