The tourism sector along the Belgian coast has expressed strong satisfaction following the recent spring half-term holiday, known locally as the ‘crocus holiday.’
According to Westtoer, the provincial tourism organization, the coastal region saw a significant increase in visitors, with overnight stays and day-tripper numbers reaching record levels compared to the previous year.
Westtoer reported approximately 850,000 overnight stays during the holiday, marking a remarkable 30% rise from last year’s figures.
The peak was observed during the second weekend of the break, with coastal hotels experiencing an average occupancy rate of up to 75%. Some resorts recorded hotel occupancy rates exceeding 80%, highlighting the growing appeal of the Belgian coast as a year-round destination.
In addition to overnight visitors, the coast also attracted around 750,000 day-trippers throughout the holiday period, reflecting a 50% increase compared to last year.
The busiest period was the final weekend, which alone saw up to 150,000 day-trippers. Sunday, 2nd March, proved to be particularly popular, drawing approximately 130,000 visitors, boosted by various carnival events held across the coastal towns.
Jurgen Vanlerberghe, Deputy and Chairman of Westtoer, emphasized the positive impact of the surge in tourism, stating, “The recent spring half-term holiday was a boost for tourism. The coast is positioning itself more than ever as a year-round destination.”
The increase in visitors was partly attributed to the new school holiday schedule in French-speaking Belgium. The adjusted timetable provided French-speaking Belgians with a two-week holiday, extending beyond the traditional week-long break observed by Flemish schools.
Due to less favorable weather conditions during the first week, many French-speaking holidaymakers opted to visit the coast during the second week, coinciding with the presence of Flemish tourists. According to Westtoer, French-speaking Belgians accounted for 25% of the overnight stays during this period.
Local businesses along the coast reported thriving trade, particularly during the weekends, as the influx of tourists boosted hospitality and retail sectors. Restaurants, cafes, and beachside vendors experienced a surge in demand, with many reporting higher sales compared to previous years.
The enhanced visitor numbers have reaffirmed the coastal region’s appeal as an all-season destination, encouraging stakeholders to invest further in year-round attractions and accommodations.
Looking ahead, tourism officials are optimistic about maintaining this upward trend. Westtoer has outlined plans to enhance off-season offerings, including cultural events, sports activities, and expanded accommodation options to attract even more visitors outside the traditional summer peak.
As the Belgian coast continues to evolve into a year-round destination, the success of the ‘crocus holiday’ serves as a promising indicator for the upcoming tourist seasons.
