Srinagar- The Indian Government intends to establish a regional National Institute of Virology in Jammu & Kashmir as a measure to enhance research on pandemics. Originally, the regional NIV for the northern region was meant to be set up in Chandigarh.
However, due to a land dispute in Chandigarh, the project will now be relocated to Jammu. The parliamentary standing committee on Health & Family Welfare has reported that the reason for the change in location is the land dispute in Chandigarh.
They presented the report to the Parliament on March 15, 2023.
The report indicates that the site for the National Institute of Virology in Jammu is still being determined. The Jammu UT authority initially identified a location, but a committee deemed it unsuitable. The authority has now put forward three more potential sites, and a team of experts from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is planning to visit Jammu soon to assess them. This information is outlined in the report.
As per the report, the locations for setting up three regional National Institutes of Virology (NIVs) have been confirmed, except for Jammu. The report states that the location for Jammu’s NIV is still under consideration. The other three NIVs will be established in Dibrugarh, Bengaluru, and Jabalpur, as per the report.
