The Interregional Environment Cell (IRCEL/CELINE) has issued a warning about particularly high ozone concentrations in the air across the country on Tuesday afternoon, driven by the recent warm and sunny weather.
The agency cautions that the ozone levels may exceed the European alert threshold of 180 micrograms per cubic meter in some areas, necessitating public awareness.
According to IRCEL/CELINE, the high temperatures on Tuesday will reach 30°C inland, with the possibility of even higher temperatures in the northeast.
The day is expected to be sunny with minimal wind, conditions conducive to the accumulation of ozone.
“Due to the accumulation of air pollution from the past few days and the warm and very sunny weather, ozone concentrations will rise this afternoon,” the agency stated in a press release.
The highest concentrations are anticipated in the central regions, including in and around Brussels.
Ozone levels typically peak in the late afternoon and early evening, whereas they remain low in the mornings. Indoor concentrations are generally about half those found outdoors.
Wednesday will still see elevated ozone levels, but the concentrations are not expected to breach the European threshold.
By Thursday, August 1, the air quality is projected to improve significantly, with ozone levels returning to typical values for this time of year.
Health Implications
Exposure to high ozone levels can have various health impacts depending on the concentration, duration of exposure, individual sensitivity, and the level of physical activity undertaken.
Common health issues include impaired lung function, eye and upper respiratory tract irritation, and respiratory symptoms such as coughing, particularly in sensitive individuals.
People with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) may experience heightened severity and frequency of symptoms.
“People who are particularly sensitive to air pollution (children, the elderly, people with respiratory problems) should avoid unusual outdoor physical activity between 12:00 noon and 22:00,” IRCEL/CELINE advised.
The agency further emphasized that if the alert threshold is exceeded, these precautions should be observed by the entire population.

With the possibility of high ozone levels, IRCEL/CELINE has recommended several measures to mitigate exposure and protect public health:
- Limit Outdoor Activities: Especially for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory issues, it is advisable to avoid strenuous outdoor activities between noon and 10 PM.
- Stay Indoors: Since indoor ozone levels are generally lower, staying indoors can help reduce exposure.
- Monitor Air Quality Updates: Staying informed about current air quality levels through reliable sources can help the public take timely action.
As ozone concentrations are set to peak in the central parts of the country, including Brussels, residents are urged to heed these warnings and take the necessary precautions to protect their health.
