Belgium faces an annual financial burden of €10.9 billion due to road accidents, according to a study published by the Vias Institute for the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. The report underscores the wide-ranging impacts of road accidents, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures.
“Besides immense human suffering, road accidents lead to other negative consequences such as material damage, medical costs, and work incapacities,” the Vias Institute stated in its findings.
Heavy Costs per Incident
The study provided a detailed breakdown of the societal costs associated with road accidents. It revealed that each fatality on Belgian roads costs society €7 million, while a serious injury results in a €700,000 expense. Even minor injuries carry a significant price tag, averaging €70,000 per case.
The analysis examined both the immediate and long-term costs of road accidents. Immediate costs include medical expenses and property damage, while subsequent costs stem from work incapacities, loss of production, and insurance payouts.
Sobering Statistics
In 2023, 501 lives were lost in road accidents across Belgium, including 76 young people under the age of 25. These figures were highlighted during a gathering at Remembrance Square in Ixelles, organized by the Association of Parents of Road Accident Victims. The event aimed to commemorate victims and call for greater action to prevent future tragedies.
A Call for Action
Federal Mobility Minister Georges Gilkinet emphasized the need for intensified efforts to reduce road accidents. “The estimate by Vias of the cost of road accidents for Belgian citizens, an enormous burden of nearly €11 billion for 2022, must prompt politicians and all concerned parties to further increase efforts and investments in road safety and safer mobility,” he stated.
Minister Gilkinet pointed to a positive trend in recent years, with road fatalities decreasing by 39 between 2022 and 2023. “The recorded decrease in road insecurity over the past four years shows that Belgium is on the right track,” he noted.
Measures to Combat Drink-Driving
Gilkinet highlighted upcoming measures aimed at tackling drink-driving, particularly among foreign drivers. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve road safety and reduce the devastating human and economic toll of traffic accidents.
