Menen, Belgium – An illegal rave attended by an estimated 350 to 500 people was shut down in the early hours of Sunday morning in an industrial zone in Menen, West Flanders. Authorities swiftly intervened following reports of suspicious activity in an old warehouse near the Leie River.
Police were first alerted around 1:00 a.m. by a private security service monitoring the Grensland industrial zone. The security team noticed unusual movement at a vacant warehouse near the river lock and contacted authorities.
Emergency services, including police, fire brigade, medical teams, and city officials, promptly arrived to assess the situation. The owner of the warehouse was also informed immediately.
Authorities Intervene to End the Gathering
After discussions between Mayor Eddy Lust, the local police chief, and the rave organizers, an agreement was reached to bring the event to an early close.
The music was completely shut off by 6:00 a.m. As attendees departed, police conducted alcohol and drug tests on drivers to ensure road safety.
“We take stern action against such illegal events,” said Mayor Lust. “They not only pose a danger to the participants themselves but also cause nuisance and risks to the surrounding area. Thanks to constructive dialogue with the organizers and decisive action by our services, we managed the situation without incidents.”
Concerns Over Illegal Gatherings
Local authorities have expressed increasing concern over unauthorized raves, citing potential risks such as fire hazards, drug abuse, and noise disturbances.
The mayor emphasized that such events are “absolutely unacceptable” and reaffirmed the city’s commitment to preventing them in the future.
Officials are now reviewing response measures to improve reaction times and strengthen preventive actions. Discussions are underway regarding potential legal consequences for the organizers and possible measures to prevent the misuse of industrial sites for unauthorized gatherings.
Community Response and Future Actions
Residents of Menen have voiced their support for the authorities’ swift response. Many locals reported disturbances due to loud music and increased traffic in the area overnight.
Law enforcement agencies continue to monitor industrial zones and other vulnerable locations to prevent further unauthorized gatherings. Authorities are urging property owners to secure vacant buildings to prevent their use for similar events in the future.
“We will continue to take action against these illegal gatherings and evaluate how to respond even faster to future incidents,” Mayor Lust assured.
The crackdown on this illegal rave serves as a clear warning to potential organizers and attendees. Authorities remain vigilant and committed to enforcing the law to maintain safety and public order in Menen.
