As the new school year approaches, the Wallonian Road Safety Agency (AWSR) is intensifying its campaign to promote cycling safety among children.
The agency’s latest report highlights the urgent need for high-visibility vests and helmets to protect young cyclists, emphasizing their crucial role in preventing accidents and reducing injuries.
According to AWSR, cycling accidents involving children are a significant concern. Data from 2019 to 2023 reveals that approximately 40 children aged 6 to 11 and over 120 teenagers aged 12 to 17 are involved in cycling accidents each year in Wallonia.
The majority of these incidents, over 80%, occur in built-up areas, where the risk is notably higher.
In response to these statistics, AWSR is stressing the importance of wearing helmets. A recent survey conducted by the agency found that nearly half (48%) of cyclists in Wallonia do not consistently wear helmets.
Despite this, helmets are highly effective in preventing severe injuries. The AWSR reports that wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of head injury by up to 65%, a crucial statistic given the vulnerability of young cyclists.
The agency underscores the need for helmet use, particularly for children. Young cyclists are often more unpredictable and less experienced, which can lead to riskier behavior on the road. Introducing helmet-wearing at an early age can help instill this essential safety habit for the future.
High-visibility vests are also a critical component of the agency’s safety recommendations. AWSR advises that these vests should be worn even during daylight hours.
The visibility provided by these vests allows cyclists and pedestrians to be seen from a distance of 150 meters in car headlights—seven times further than if wearing dark clothing. This enhanced visibility can significantly reduce the likelihood of accidents by making cyclists more noticeable to drivers.
In addition to helmets and vests, AWSR emphasizes the importance of using child-friendly backpacks designed for cycling.
These backpacks are tailored to ensure that children can carry their belongings safely and comfortably while riding. The agency also advises parents to choose the safest route for their children, rather than the shortest, and to educate them on road safety rules.
Furthermore, AWSR suggests that children should be at least ten years old before being allowed to navigate traffic on their own.
This recommendation is based on the understanding that younger children may not yet have the skills and judgment needed to safely handle complex traffic situations.
As the school year begins, AWSR’s message is clear: prioritizing safety through the use of helmets and high-visibility vests can make a significant difference in preventing cycling accidents and protecting young lives.
