Brussels, March 17, 2025 – The Irish community in Brussels has been celebrating Saint Patrick’s Day in grand style, with a host of cultural, musical, and social events leading up to the big day.
From lively parades and concerts to networking soirées and charity balls, the Belgian capital has embraced the spirit of Ireland’s most famous holiday with enthusiasm.
A Weekend of Irish Celebrations
Festivities kicked off over the weekend with a vibrant parade that transformed the streets of Brussels into a sea of green. Cultural, linguistic, and musical events brought together locals and expatriates alike to honour Ireland’s patron saint.
But the celebrations are far from over. Monday, the official Saint Patrick’s Day, promises a packed schedule of events, giving residents and visitors an opportunity to immerse themselves in Irish culture.
Irish Music Fills Brussels’ Bars
For music lovers, the highlight of the evening is the free concert “From Galway to Brussels”, hosted by Joran, a cider bar in Schaerbeek known for its regular Irish music sessions.
The concert, which begins at 20:00, features live performances of traditional Irish tunes, creating an authentic atmosphere for attendees.
Many Irish pubs across the city, including De Valera’s on Place Flagey, O’Reilly’s on Place de la Bourse, and The Wild Geese on Avenue Livingstone, are also hosting live music sessions throughout the night.
Manneken Pis Joins the Festivities
One of Brussels’ most famous landmarks, Manneken Pis, is also taking part in the celebrations. The iconic statue is dressed in a traditional Irish outfit – a flat cap and an Aran jumper – for the occasion.
A formal costume unveiling ceremony took place on Monday morning at 11:00 on Rue de l’Etuve, accompanied by live performances from Comhaltas Brussels, the city’s Irish traditional music group.
For those who missed the ceremony, Comhaltas will be performing at several private events throughout the week and also offers Irish music lessons for enthusiasts interested in learning traditional tunes.
Networking and Charity Events
Brussels’ Irish business and diplomatic community are also marking the occasion with exclusive networking events. Ireland’s ambassadors to Belgium and the EU are hosting a soirée at Bozar, supported by the Irish business lobby IBEC.
Meanwhile, the Irish Young Professionals have organized a networking event at Grand Central Bar on Thursday, March 20, welcoming students, trainees, and young professionals.
On the more formal end of the spectrum, the Irish Charity Ball will take place on Saturday, March 22, at the prestigious Steigenberger Hotel on Place Stephanie.
Organized by the Irish Club of Belgium, the black-tie event includes a champagne reception, a three-course dinner, live music, dancing, and an open bar.
Proceeds from the event will support children’s charities in both Ireland and Belgium, with last year’s edition raising over €6,000.
Exploring Saint Patrick’s Legacy
For those interested in the historical and cultural significance of Saint Patrick, the Irish College of Leuven will host a free documentary screening titled “Patrick: A Slave to Ireland” on April 7.
The film challenges modern perceptions of Saint Patrick and delves into Ireland’s pagan past. A discussion with the documentary’s producer and director will follow the screening, concluding with a drinks reception.
