The Brussels Fire Brigade has once again demonstrated its commitment to supporting Ukraine by donating four ambulances, a move made in partnership with Brussels State Secretary Ans Persoons and Mayor Philippe Close.
This latest contribution marks the third time the brigade has delivered essential equipment to the country since the outbreak of war. Fire brigade spokesperson Walter Derieuw emphasized the symbolic importance of the initiative:
“This donation represents another step in Brussels’ solidarity with the Ukrainian people, who continue to suffer greatly due to the war.”
The Brussels Fire Brigade first sent aid in 2022, when two ambulances were delivered to Kyiv by then-State Secretary Pascal Smet and Mayor Close.
In 2024, the second mission included three ambulances, two fire engines, and additional equipment. With this new contribution, Brussels’ total aid has reached eight ambulances and five fire engines.
For Ans Persoons, Brussels State Secretary for Firefighting and Emergency Medical Assistance, the donation carries a deeper message: “Through this donation, we aim not only to save lives but also to send a clear message of solidarity. We support Ukrainian first responders who continue to care for others under the most challenging conditions. Thanks to the efforts of the Brussels Fire Brigade, the City of Brussels, and all involved partners, this vital equipment reaches where it’s most urgently needed.”
The leadership of the Brussels Fire Brigade highlighted that such operations are far from simple. “These efforts involve significant logistical and administrative challenges. Yet, through the dedication and cooperation of all stakeholders, we can bring these initiatives to a successful conclusion. Our Ukrainian colleagues have expressed deep gratitude for this support,” they stated.
While direct communication with fire brigades in Kyiv and Kharkiv is often hampered by war and language barriers, regular visits from Brussels delegations to Ukraine have ensured close collaboration. These personal exchanges have helped foster mutual trust and understanding, making it possible for aid deliveries to proceed smoothly despite the complex environment.
The ongoing donations by the Brussels Fire Brigade underline not only humanitarian concern but also the broader solidarity of European cities with Ukraine. Each mission represents a practical step toward supporting first responders on the frontlines of a devastating conflict.
With this third shipment, Brussels has cemented its role as a consistent supporter of Ukraine’s emergency services, offering vital equipment that continues to save lives under extraordinary conditions.
