The Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (Afsca) received a record 5,222 complaints in 2024, marking a 7% increase compared to the previous year, according to reports by newspapers 7Dimanche and De Zondag.
The surge in consumer reports highlights growing public vigilance regarding food safety and hygiene standards across Belgium.
Hygiene and Food Poisoning Among Top Concerns
Afsca data reveals that the majority of complaints were related to hygiene issues (30%), food poisoning incidents (27%), and improper food storage practices (17%).
These concerns underline the importance of maintaining strict safety regulations in food handling and distribution. The Horeca sector—comprising hotels, restaurants, and cafés—was the most frequently reported, accounting for nearly half of the complaints.
Meanwhile, 45% of complaints were directed at distribution businesses, including supermarkets, grocery stores, butcheries, and bakeries.
Despite the high number of reports, Afsca clarified that these figures do not necessarily indicate poorer food safety practices in these sectors. Instead, they reflect the high volume of consumer interactions with these businesses, increasing the likelihood of reports.
Swift Action and Resolution Rate
Afsca took concrete action in over half of the reported cases, conducting field inspections and ensuring necessary corrective measures were implemented. The agency also demonstrated efficiency in handling complaints, successfully addressing 94% of them within 30 days.
Further analysis revealed that in 49% of cases, the reported issues were found to be justified, reinforcing the importance of consumer vigilance in maintaining food safety standards.

Experts suggest that the rise in complaints is partly due to increased consumer awareness of food safety regulations and improved accessibility to reporting mechanisms.
