Brussels, Belgium: In a bid to address the rising concerns of residents being disturbed by the deafening sirens of emergency service vehicles, the Brussels Government has taken a significant step towards creating a more tranquil cityscape.
The decision, made on Thursday, mandates a noise limit for sirens on all new emergency service vehicles operating in the Brussels-Capital Region, with enforcement slated to begin from January 2025.
The move comes after a perception survey conducted by Brussels Environment in 2017 revealed that emergency service vehicle sirens ranked among the top three noise nuisances for residents in the Belgian capital.
The study, which surveyed the opinions of thousands of residents, indicated that the relentless blare of sirens disrupted sleep patterns and quality of life, with concerns extending beyond mere inconvenience to potential health consequences.
At present, over 2,000 emergency service vehicles in Brussels, excluding those in the private sector, roam the streets without any legal restrictions on the noise levels of their sirens.
This regulatory gap has prompted the Brussels Government to take decisive action to protect the well-being of its citizens.
The new regulations stipulate that during the day, emergency service vehicles cannot exceed noise levels of 100 decibels, a figure deemed ambitious by Environment Minister Alain Maron.
For nighttime operations, between 22:00 and 07:00, the noise limit drops to 90 decibels. Minister Maron believes that these stringent limits will contribute to a quieter urban environment and enhance the sleep quality of Brussels residents.
“Brussels residents should be able to live and relax in a quiet environment, both on the city’s outskirts and the city centre.
That is the aim of the many consultations we have held, and thanks to which there is now a legal framework to limit the volume of emergency vehicles’ sirens,” remarked Minister Maron, who proposed these groundbreaking measures.
The decision results from a thoughtful and consultative process, reflecting the government’s commitment to balancing the essential nature of emergency services with the right of residents to enjoy a peaceful living environment.
The move aligns with broader efforts in Brussels to address noise nuisances, including those caused by traffic and overflying aircraft.
As the countdown to January 2025 begins, the Brussels Government hopes this proactive approach will set a precedent for other urban centres grappling with similar noise-related challenges.
