Belgium has taken a significant step to modernise its defence forces, approving a series of acquisitions designed to upgrade both its naval and land-based military capabilities.
The government confirmed that the investments will strengthen operational readiness, provide state-of-the-art training systems, and enhance the firepower available to Belgian troops.
Defence Minister Theo Francken said these measures form part of a broader strategy to ensure the armed forces remain fit for modern challenges. As part of its naval build-up, Belgium will acquire €16.4 million worth of 40mm/L70 3P munitions.
The advanced rounds, supplied through a cooperative programme with the Netherlands, are intended for the BAE Systems Bofors Mk4 cannons. Each of Belgium’s new anti-submarine warfare frigates (ASWF), currently under construction, will be fitted with two of these versatile weapons.
The Mk4 cannons are renowned for their ability to handle diverse threats, ranging from fast attack craft to airborne targets. Officials noted that the new system will significantly boost the country’s naval defensive and offensive capacities once the frigates are commissioned.
On land, the Defence Ministry has authorised the purchase of 60mm mortar systems produced by Austria’s Hirtenberger Defence Systems.
The weapons will be deployed by Belgium’s Special Operations Regiment (SOR), providing the elite unit with greater tactical firepower. Hirtenberger mortars are already widely used within NATO, offering high levels of accuracy and portability.
Alongside the weapon acquisitions, Belgium is also investing heavily in training and simulation. The Council of Ministers approved a €35.9 million contract for digital simulators dedicated to the country’s new JAGUAR and GRIFFON combat vehicles.
The deal includes not only the delivery of the systems but also two years of technical support to maintain them.
Military officials highlighted that the digital training platforms will allow Belgian troops to conduct highly realistic exercises without the logistical and environmental costs of large-scale field drills.
The systems will ensure that soldiers are fully prepared to operate the new vehicles effectively when they enter service. Altogether, these programmes mark a combined investment of more than €52 million in modernising Belgium’s armed forces.
The Defence Ministry has emphasised that the upgrades are essential to keep pace with evolving security challenges and to ensure Belgium remains a reliable partner within NATO and European defence frameworks.
Francken underlined that the acquisitions represent a long-term commitment to technological advancement and readiness. “These investments are not only about equipment, but also about ensuring our forces are trained, capable, and prepared for the future,” he said.
With new naval firepower, enhanced ground support weapons, and advanced training systems, Belgium is signalling its intent to maintain a modern and agile military force capable of meeting regional and global security demands.
