For the first time in Brussels, a unique exhibition has been opened, presenting the works of prominent Ukrainian modernists of the early twentieth century, such as Kazymyr Malevych, Alexandra Exter, El Lissitzky, Oleksandr Bohomazov, Sarah Shor, Mykhailo Boichuk and others. The exhibition will run until January 28, 2024, and is free for all Ukrainians.
During the exhibition’s press conference, the foreign audience and all guests to the Royal Museums of Fine Arts were impressed by these artists and their works with their unusual approach, uniqueness, brightness of colours, and extraordinary forms.
“In the Eye of the Storm. Modernism in Ukraine 1900- 1930s” is a unique project travelling across Europe and has already been shown at the Museo National Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid and the Museum Ludwig in Cologne.
The exhibition features more than 60 artworks, mostly on loan from the National Museum of Ukraine (NAMU) and the Museum of Theatre, Music, and Cinema in Ukraine.
The press preview of the exhibition was held with the participation of Thomas Dermine, Federal Secretary of State for Science Policy, Sara Lammens, Director General of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, Yuliia Lytvynets, Director of the National Art Museum of Ukraine, Kateryna Denysova, curator of “In the Eye of the Storm”, art historian and doctoral candidate at the Courtauld Institute of Art.
The Embassy showed its gratitude immensely to the Royal Museums of Fine Arts, the National Museum of Ukraine, the exhibition’s co-curators Kateryna Denysova, Konstyantyn Akinsha, Olena Kashuba-Volvach and the entire team that worked on the project.
