New Delhi [India]: Sources have revealed that India has brought to the attention of Canadian authorities the plight of Indian students who are facing deportation. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has also discussed the matter with his Canadian counterpart. The authorities have been urged numerous times to act fairly since the students are not responsible for their situation.
Sources also revealed the report in which they said Indian students living in Canada had been threatened with deportation for allegedly submitting fraudulent admission letters, and the actual number is 700 near about.
According to sources, a few students have received orders to stay their deportation notices recently.
It has been acknowledged that the Indian Government’s continuous efforts have played a significant role in the Canadian Government adopting a compassionate approach and considering the students’ perspective.
The sources said most of these students went to Canada in 2017-2019. After completing their studies, some obtained work permits, while others continued to study in Canada.
Indian Government put this matter to the Canadian authorities in Canada and New Delhi. EAM also raise this matter with the Canadian counterpart. MEA took this matter to Canada in April 2023. Indian Consulate in Toronto, where most of the students are based, have met many of them.
Moreover, the Canadian Government urges all to be fair and humanitarian since the students are not at fault.
Sources also pointed out that there were gaps in the Canadian system and a need for more diligence, owing to which the students were granted visas and allowed to enter Canada.
Since then, Canadian parliamentarians across political parties have spoken in support of the students, sources added.
The Immigration Minister of Canada, Sean Frasier, has stated that the country is working to find a solution for international students experiencing uncertainty. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has also recognized the importance of treating students fairly.
