SAN DIEGO – July 17, 2025 — Belgium has marked a significant step forward in its military modernization efforts, with the first aircrew successfully completing training to operate the MQ-9B SkyGuardian, one of the world’s most advanced Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA).
The training was conducted by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) and concluded at the company’s Desert Horizon test facility in El Mirage, California.
The Belgian aircrew underwent an extensive, multi-phase training program that began in Belgium and continued through GA-ASI’s Flight Test & Training Center in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
The final phase included hands-on instruction and flight simulations focused on real-time Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) operations, Automatic Takeoff and Landing Capability (ATLC), and emergency procedures.
“Providing all-encompassing training for the aircrews of our customers goes hand-in-hand with delivering the world’s most capable RPA,” said David R. Alexander, President of GA-ASI. “Completing this training ensures that Belgium is ready and able to operate their MQ-9Bs and maximize the benefits that come from long-range, high-endurance RPA.”
The MQ-9B SkyGuardian is equipped with advanced systems including the Multi-Spectral Targeting System (MTS), Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), and the System for Tasking and Real-Time Exploitation (STARE). These features provide unmatched situational awareness and surveillance capabilities.
The first of four MQ-9B drones ordered by the Belgian Ministry of Defence completed its maiden flight in February and is currently undergoing final Acceptance Test Procedures.
It is expected to be delivered to Belgium by the end of September. The foreign military sale also includes two Certified Ground Control Stations to support operations.
The MQ-9B SkyGuardian is capable of operating in unsegregated airspace, thanks to GA-ASI’s Detect and Avoid system. The aircraft delivers exceptional endurance and range, with pole-to-pole SATCOM-only control.
In addition to Belgium, the MQ-9B has been adopted by the United Kingdom’s Royal Air Force (Protector), Canada, Poland, Japan, Taiwan, India, and U.S. Special Operations Command.
This training milestone strengthens Belgium’s role as a NATO ally and enhances its capabilities in global ISR operations, maritime surveillance, and border security.
General Atomics, the creator of the iconic Predator® drone family, has logged over 8 million flight hours globally and continues to expand its offerings with long-endurance, multi-mission UAS platforms.
Belgium’s adoption of the MQ-9B SkyGuardian is expected to significantly improve its defence forces’ operational reach and intelligence capabilities in a fast-evolving security environment.
