Jammu and Kashmir, India: The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) Jammu has ventured on a project to get about nine products of Ladakh and Jammu, and Kashmir registered under GI tags for further submission to Human Welfare Association, Varanasi. The NABARD has looked on to provide a unique identity to the products of Jammu and Kashmir as well as Ladakh.
Geographical Indications (GI) is a kind of Intellectual Property Right, providing a distinct identity to the goods that originate or have been manufactured/produced in a specific geographical location and possess unique nature, quality and characteristics subjective to that particular location.
NABARD facilitates end-to-end support for pre as well as post-registration activities for GI. The agricultural, handicrafts and handloom products of J&K and Ladakh carry a larger market potential. The products that have been registered included in the GI registration include Chikri Wood Craft (Rajouri), Basholi Pashmina Woolen Products (Kathua), Kaladi (Udhampur), Bhaderwah Rajma (Doda), Mushkbudji Rice (Anantnag), Sulai Honey (Ramban), Basohli Paintings (Kathua), Anardana (Ramban), Ladakh Wood Carving (Ladakh).
The applications for the registration of these products haveย
been filed at the GI registry, Chennai. The Consultative Group Meeting (CGM) of these products was held on December 2, 2022, at the Jammu University Campus. Being in the final stage of receiving the GI tag, the process is expected to be completed very soon.
It is noteworthy that the GI Tag provides legal protection to the original producers of goods within the original geographical area with recognition. Additionally, it prevents the unauthorized use of registered Geographical Indications by the third partiesย
along with boosting exports, thereby providing international recognition of the goods as well as the area of origin of those goods.
The authorized user of GI tags carries the right to make use of the Geographical Indication in relation to goods in respect of which it has been registered. Other than that, no other person can copy it from beyond that geographical area, thus preventing the misuse of the original product.
