Rail companies operating on the high-speed line between London and the Channel Tunnel will benefit from significant cost reductions starting in April, the UK’s rail regulator, the Office of Rail and Road (ORR), confirmed on Wednesday.
This move, which is expected to have an impact on ticket prices, aims to ease financial pressures on both passenger and freight services using the high-speed HS1 route.
The ORR has mandated a reduction of approximately 10% in the charges that operators must pay to access the track.
The reduction comes after a thorough review of HS1’s spending plans and is intended to provide both financial relief and long-term stability for operators.
Eurostar, the key operator on the HS1 line, quickly welcomed the announcement, stating that the decision would benefit passengers and help ease the financial burden of operating on the line.
Feras Alshaker, Director of the ORR, explained that the move followed an independent and comprehensive analysis of HS1’s expenditure, which highlighted the need for lower charges.
“Our thorough and independent analysis of HS1’s spending plans has led to significantly lower costs for both passenger and freight train operators using the line from April,” Alshaker said in a press release.
Eurostar, which operates high-speed trains connecting London with Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam, noted that the reduction in track access charges would offer some relief after years of rising costs.
“In recent years, track access costs have risen significantly beyond inflation, increasing pressure to invest in stations and infrastructure to meet our future development goals,” the company said.
The track access charges are a key operating cost for Eurostar, and the reduction is expected to alleviate some of the financial strain.
In addition to serving Eurostar’s international services, the HS1 line is also used by domestic trains connecting London and Kent, as well as freight trains transporting goods to and from the Channel Tunnel.
The cost reductions are therefore expected to benefit a wide range of rail operators. Eurostar further emphasized that the financial flexibility resulting from the decision would allow for much-needed investments in the company’s infrastructure and customer experience.
