The European Commission announced that among EU measures, 2,000 health professionals will be trained to work in a multi-disciplinary way by 2026 to meet the mental healthcare needs of young people.
On World Mental Health Day, the European Commission publicized statistics ‘EUDataCrunch’ shows that young people especially are not receiving the care they need. Almost two in four people in the EU reported unmet mental health care needs.
That’s why the Commission is putting mental health on par with physical health by introducing 20 flagship initiatives and providing €1.23 billion in funding.
Among these measures:
- The Youth First flagship programme will develop tools for children and young people to address mental health,
- 2000 health professionals will be trained to work in a multi-disciplinary way by 2026,
- €18 million will be dedicated to tackling stigma and discrimination around mental health,
- €6 million will be dedicated to preventing depression and suicide.
The European Commission highlighted that mental health issues often start early in life, with half emerging before age 14. Sadly, many of these issues go unnoticed and untreated, especially among adolescents and young adults.
These unaddressed mental health challenges can have long-lasting impacts on their lives. To counter the harmful effects of mental health issues, the EU is set to recruit 2,000 health professionals by 2026, mainly to prevent young people from suffering from mental disorders.

Cultivate a positive environment: Encourage youth to express their feelings and problems and make the right choices, follow their passion and do what makes them happy. It is necessary to learn how to manage stress and overcome every challenge.
World Mental Health Day, celebrated every year on October 10, is dedicated to promoting the understanding of mental health education, awareness, and advocacy. First held in 1992, October 10 is the day dedicated to raising awareness about mental health issues and to fight the stigma still associated with it.
The European Commission emphasized that It’s important to raise awareness of mental health conditions and ensure that communities recognize each person has a role in creating a mentally healthy society. World Mental Health Day is an excellent opportunity to do this.
