Brussels, April 2, 2025 – The medieval Porte de Hal (‘Hallepoort’ in Dutch), one of the last standing relics of Brussels’ fortified past, is undergoing a significant renovation to restore its roof and external joinery, the Buildings Agency announced on Tuesday.
The €1.6 million project aims to preserve the 14th-century monument while ensuring the safety and longevity of the structure. The renovation works officially commenced on March 24, 2025, with the installation of the construction site, and are expected to be completed by December 2026.
The scope of work includes the restoration of the building’s slate roof and external joinery, with damaged slates being replaced and salvageable ones reused. The windows and skylights will also undergo essential repairs to improve stability and prevent further water infiltration.

Despite the extensive restoration efforts, the museum housed within the Porte de Hal will remain open throughout the duration of the works.
Scaffolding will be erected at the entrances on the Marolles and Saint-Gilles sides to facilitate the construction process while minimizing disruptions to visitors.
