Belgium’s national railway operator, SNCB/NMBS, will roll out a completely revamped fare structure on Wednesday, 15 October, aiming to make train travel cheaper and more transparent for passengers. The company says around 80% of travellers will benefit from reduced prices under the new system.
The overhaul replaces a complex mix of fixed and distance-based fares with one uniform model. “Until now, there were various ticket options—some based on kilometres travelled and others with fixed fares linked to certain conditions,” SNCB explained.
“This sometimes confused passengers. With the new ticket offer, that is now a thing of the past.”
Under the new structure, all fares will be calculated according to the distance travelled, with fixed-price tickets replaced by percentage discounts. The maximum price of a standard second-class adult ticket will drop by 20%, capping at €20.90 instead of €26.
For frequent travellers, SNCB is introducing a new Train+ discount card, available monthly or annually for €6 per month. Holders will receive an extra 40% discount during off-peak hours and weekends, along with a reduced maximum fare, even during rush hour.
“The Train+ card allows people who take the train often to benefit even more, especially if they travel outside peak times,” said SNCB spokesperson Dimitri Temmerman.
However, not all passengers are pleased with the changes. Popular Multi-passes, which offered ten discounted journeys, are being discontinued, along with Youth, Senior, and Local Multi tickets. According to Peter Meukens, chair of passenger organisation TreinTramBus, this could mean higher costs for long-distance travellers.
“For people who used to buy Multi-passes, this change will make travel more expensive,” Meukens said. “A long trip that used to cost €10.50 each way will now rise to €14.”
Despite the criticism, shorter-distance passengers stand to benefit most. With Train+, adults aged 26 to 64 can combine discounts—30% for weekend tickets plus 40% from Train+—bringing total savings to 58%. During off-peak hours and weekends, groups of four or more will receive 40% off, while groups of 15 or more can still enjoy 60% reductions.
Special discounts remain for specific demographics. Young passengers under 26, senior citizens over 65, and people entitled to increased allowances automatically receive 40% off, even without the Train+ card. With Train+, their discount increases to 64%, capping fares at €5.50 per journey. Children under 12 continue to travel free with an adult.
TreinTramBus has voiced concern that the layered discounts may confuse passengers. “It has been made so complicated that it will lead to a lot of discussion,” Meukens warned. “If it’s too complex, people might give up and drive instead.”
SNCB insists the new structure will streamline fare options and encourage rail use. Passengers can already use the SNCB website to simulate potential savings and choose the most cost-effective option for their journeys.
