As the cosmic ballet of the universe continues, residents in Belgium are being given another opportunity to witness the mesmerizing phenomenon of the Northern Lights, or auroras, this weekend.
The potential display comes as two solar storms approach Earth, sparked by a massive solar flare—the most powerful since 2017—indicating that the sun’s “storm season” is very much alive.
Christine Verbeke, a space weather reporter affiliated with KU Leuven and NASA, informed VRT that the first of the solar storms could arrive as early as Friday night.
However, she cautioned that this initial storm may not be particularly strong and might even bypass Earth entirely. “There is a possibility that it will not even arrive,” Verbeke stated.
The second solar storm, however, is anticipated to be much more powerful, sending a direct wave of charged particles toward our planet. This surge in solar activity was triggered by a colossal explosion on the sun that occurred on Thursday, classified as a “class X9.0” solar flare.
The classification system for solar flares uses the letter “X” to denote the strongest category, while the number reflects the intensity within that category. An X9.0 flare indicates a significant release of energy, making it a notable event in recent solar history.
The solar flare has sent a stream of charged particles on a trajectory toward Earth, expected to arrive late Saturday night.
This surge could generate what the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) describes as a “strong category 3 geomagnetic storm.” Such storms can wreak havoc on satellites and disrupt communication and navigation systems, particularly in regions closer to the poles.
Despite the potential for spectacular views of the auroras, Verbeke tempered expectations for visibility in Belgium. She remarked, “The probability of visible Northern Lights in Belgium is lower than it was in May.”
During that month, a category 5 geomagnetic storm allowed for stunning auroras visible throughout the night, even to the naked eye. It marked the first occurrence of such an extreme storm since October 2003.
Currently, the forecast suggests that while there is a chance for the Northern Lights to grace the skies, they may not be as pronounced as they were in May.
Verbeke highlighted that the likelihood of seeing the auroras is higher in the northern regions of the Netherlands, yet she emphasized that predicting such celestial events is inherently uncertain.
For those eager to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights, Verbeke recommends looking towards the north, just above the horizon, particularly during the storm’s peak.
She noted that individuals may have a better chance of capturing the auroras through a smartphone camera rather than seeing them with the naked eye.
“You are more likely to see it through a (smartphone) camera than with the naked eye,” she explained, advising enthusiasts to take advantage of technology to document the event.
