Belgium: Corona Commissioner will stop working from 8 April

In Belgium, 8 April will be the last working day of the Corona Commissioner’s office, which used to handle the advice reports and was responsible for the coronavirus policy of the nation.

According to the information provided by the sources, the Corona Commissioner’s office draws up the advice reports to the officials.

As per the reports, Corona Commissioner Pedro Facon confirmed that, while the GEMS expert group will constantly advise the Government on how to move forward, the Commissariat will no longer be required now that the issue has been resolved.

Facon mentioned, “The epidemiological situation makes it possible to phase out crisis management, also in terms of crisis coordination.” He further noted that he has been making preparation to transfer his assignment to the country’s Crisis Centre and Federal Publis Health Service.

However, the GEMS expert group, which is to help the Consultative Committee, will continue to give guidance on crisis management.

Along with this, GEMS member and biostatistician Geert Molenberghs shared the information, “We are entering a long period of quiet lower numbers, then we will hear less from the GEMS. But imagine that there is a flare-up of the virus in the autumn because a new variant appears. For example, the GEMS will issue advice on going to a certain colour code.”

Furthermore, on Friday, the Consultative Committee will again have a gathering and think of switching to “Code Yellow” on the Coronavirus barometer, which means a lot of measures would be lifted.

An in-depth overview of the different colour codes on the coronavirus barometer can be discovered here.
