As winter approaches, Belgium may experience its first snowfall of the season next week, with colder temperatures and a mix of precipitation predicted across the country. However, the snow will likely be limited to the southern regions, while the rest of Belgium contends with rain and chilly winds.
Snow Expected in Upper Belgium
The Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI) forecasts that snowflakes could appear as early as Tuesday in the higher altitudes of the Ardennes and High Fens. Temperatures are expected to drop to freezing during the day, with lows reaching -2°C at night in these areas.
“Some snow is possible in Upper Belgium from Tuesday,” the RMI announced, adding that the snowfall is likely to be modest, with only a few centimetres expected. The snow may provide a picturesque setting for winter walks but will not be sufficient for skiing or sledging at Belgium’s winter sports resorts.
Despite the excitement surrounding the first snow, meteorologists caution that the brief winter scene will likely fade by the end of the week. Warmer conditions are expected to return, and the relatively warm ground will speed up snowmelt.
Liège Activates Winter Plan
In preparation for the predicted snow, the City of Liège has already implemented its winter plan. Authorities have stocked approximately 3,500 tonnes of de-icing salt and readied a fleet of 25 specialized vehicles, including large spreaders, snow ploughs, and tractor-mounted equipment.
Salt bins are also being distributed across the city to ensure residents can help maintain safe public spaces in areas that are harder to access. Crews are on standby to treat roads, pavements, and cycle paths as needed.
Rain and Winds Dominate Elsewhere
While the south prepares for its fleeting winter wonderland, most of Belgium will face overcast skies and rain. Following a sunny weekend, periods of moderate rainfall are expected to sweep across the country starting Tuesday. Heavy winds will add to the chill, with temperatures in Flanders and Brussels dropping to 6°C during the day and freezing at night.
The chances of snow in central and northern Belgium remain slim due to the region’s lower altitude. From Wednesday onwards, clearer skies are expected, but the biting winds will persist, making conditions feel colder than the thermometer indicates.
Early Winter Precautions
With winter still over a month away, the potential snowfall is a timely reminder for residents and municipalities to prepare for colder months ahead. Liège’s proactive measures highlight the importance of readiness, even for limited snow.
The predicted snowfall in the Ardennes and High Fens, while minor, serves as a prelude to the winter season, offering a glimpse of what’s to come for snow enthusiasts and reminding others to brace for the colder, wetter weather ahead.
