Brussels, Belgium – The Belgian League of Human Rights has raised serious concerns over what it deems as excessive and unjustified police actions against Extinction Rebellion activists during protests in Brussels over the weekend.
The demonstrations, which took place on Saturday on one of Belgium’s major thoroughfares, were aimed at drawing attention to the issue of fossil fuel subsidies. However, what started as peaceful protests soon turned chaotic as police intervention escalated.
According to witness accounts cited by the League, the police formed a perimeter around activists gathered at Jean Rey square, subsequently forcing them to join another group engaged in civil disobedience on Rue Belliard. This forced amalgamation of the two protest groups led to an atmosphere of tension and confrontation.
“The use of force by the police was disproportionate and illegitimate,” stated the League in a press release. Numerous individuals reportedly experienced trauma as a result of what was described as a “brutal response” from law enforcement officers. In total, 132 activists were detained.
The Belgian League of Human Rights emphasized the fundamental right to peaceful protest in a democratic society. “Even in the case of an unofficially authorized demonstration, individuals should not face arbitrary arrests,” the organization asserted.
The organization underscored the importance of distinguishing between different forms of protest, such as gatherings for speeches and acts of civil disobedience. It argued that while law enforcement has a duty to maintain public order, any use of force must be both necessary and proportionate.
“The confusion between peaceful assembly and civil disobedience poses a grave threat to the freedom of protest,” warned the League. Such ambiguity, it argued, could deter individuals from exercising their fundamental rights out of fear of facing harsh and unwarranted consequences.
The League called for a thorough investigation into the events of the protest, urging authorities to hold accountable those responsible for the excessive use of force. Additionally, it emphasized the need for police training to ensure officers are equipped to differentiate between various forms of protest and respond appropriately.
