Bangladesh: A mass burial site, believed to be connected to the country’s liberation war, has been discovered in Mohammadpur upazila of the Magura district. According to report from UNB, while excavating the ground for a new establishment, workers discovered human bones, skulls, and teeth.
According to the locals, these remains belong to ordinary citizens who were killed during the country’s liberation war in 1971. The establishment is an agricultural gears conservation building next to the old hall room inside the upazila parishad.
According to Abdul Hai, a former deputy commander of the upazila Muktijoddha Sangsad, during the war, the occupying Pakistani forces and their allies established a base on the roof of the old hall room of the upazila parishad.
On November 19, 1971, a battle broke out between the freedom fighters and the anti-liberation forces, during which several people lost their lives, including two brothers who were freedom fighters, Ahmad and Mohammad, and another freedom fighter named Mohammad Ullah of the then East Bengal Regiment.
Abdul Hai believes that the skulls that were discovered belonged to ordinary citizens who sacrificed their lives for the country during this fight.
The construction workers expressed their belief that further excavation in the area would lead to the discovery of more bones, skulls, and other body parts. Upon learning of the discovery, the upazila Nirbahi officer instructed that the remains be buried in accordance with religious customs at a corner of the upazila premises.
The chief imam of the upazila central mosque, Abul Kalam Azad, confirmed that the remains were buried according to religious protocols in the presence of the Upazila Nirbahi officer, the officer in charge of the police station, freedom fighters, and others.
