Anne d’Ieteren, a prominent figure in Belgian equestrian sports and honorary chair of the Belgian Paralympic Committee, has been chosen to carry the Paralympic flame on Monday, 26 August, two days before the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
This prestigious role was confirmed by the Francophone Equestrian Federation (LEWB) on Thursday, highlighting d’Ieteren’s significant contributions to the Paralympic movement.
D’Ieteren, who is renowned for her achievements in para-dressage, is among a select group of approximately 1,000 torchbearers chosen to participate in this historic relay.
The Paralympic flame will be lit on Saturday, 24 August, in Stoke Mandeville, located northwest of London. This location holds historical significance as the birthplace of the Paralympic movement, which originated after the Second World War.
The relay will see the flame travel across France over four days, entering the country through the Channel Tunnel. In a symbolic gesture of international unity, 24 English athletes will hand over the torch to 24 French athletes as it crosses the border.
The journey will cover various locations, with d’Ieteren set to carry the torch a few hundred meters in Chambly, a town north of Paris.
D’Ieteren’s selection as a torchbearer is a testament to her lasting impact on the Paralympic community. Her work in advancing para-dressage in Belgium and her support for athletes with disabilities have earned her widespread recognition.
