The Embassy of Belgium in Zagreb has recently shared an update regarding Belgium’s commitment to achieving 100% sustainable chocolate production by 2030 through its Beyond Chocolate initiative.
Belgium is renowned for its mouth-watering chocolate, but the country is also taking a proactive stance towards sustainability in the cocoa industry. As the world’s leading cocoa bean importer, Belgium is responsible for promoting ethical and environmentally friendly practices in the industry.
According to official sources, Belgium has set a goal to make its chocolate completely sustainable by 2030 through the “Beyond Chocolate” initiative to achieve a greener future and a better standard of living.
Furthermore, The initiative aims to increase transparency in the supply chain, reduce the environmental impact of cocoa production, and improve the livelihoods of farmers who grow cocoa.
Additionally, The Embassy of Belgium in Zagreb also shared essential details to clarify the main aim regarding the “Beyond Chocolate” initiative:
From 2025 onwards, all chocolate manufactured or marketed in Belgium must yield a certification standard or be integrated into a sustainability system that the company establishes.
By 2025, all partners will comply with the Cocoa & Forests Initiative agreements.
By 2030, Belgium has pledged to ensure that cocoa producers who supply the Belgian market earn a fair income. This pledge from Belgium is non-negotiable and will ensure the expansion of their businesses to maintain sustainability.
By 2030, Belgium has made an unwavering commitment to eliminate all deforestation associated with cocoa production for the Belgian market.
The commitment to save forests, protect biodiversity and mitigate the environmental impact of cocoa cultivation is an essential step towards a sustainable future.
Meanwhile, cocoa cultivation has been a major driver of deforestation in many parts of the world, leading to the loss of critical habitat for many species of plants and animals. This commitment represents a significant step forward in the fight to protect our planet and ensure a sustainable future for all.
