Bruges has secured a place among Europe’s most enchanting holiday destinations, with its Christmas market ranked 16th in Time Out Magazine’s annual list of the top 20 festive locations to visit this year. The accolade places the West Flemish city in the international spotlight as one of the continent’s most atmospheric winter experiences.
Time Out’s ranking features some of Europe’s most iconic holiday markets, with Nuremberg taking the top spot, followed by Manchester and Paris. Bruges was the only Belgian entry to make the list, earning praise for its “fairytale vibes” and picturesque medieval backdrop.
The publication highlighted Bruges’ timeless architecture, cobbled streets and warm festive glow, describing the city as “straight from a picture book.” Its unique charm, combined with a rich seasonal programme, helped secure its position among Europe’s finest Christmas destinations.
Bruges’ holiday offering is distinctive for its two simultaneous Christmas markets located in the heart of the city. The sprawling market at the Grote Markt provides a traditional festive experience, complete with wooden stalls, seasonal treats and holiday lights. Meanwhile, the market on Simon Stevin Square focuses on artisanal crafts, offering visitors handmade gifts and local creations.
This year’s markets will officially welcome visitors from 21 November until 4 January 2026. Stalls will open from Sunday to Thursday between 11:00 am and 8:00 pm, and from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Opening hours will vary on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day to accommodate holiday celebrations.
Local tourism officials expressed enthusiasm about the recognition, noting the positive impact on winter tourism and the city’s international visibility. Visit Bruges credited the city’s historic atmosphere and festive spirit as key elements that attract thousands of visitors each year.
