Train services between Ghent and Bruges were halted Sunday due to a personal incident in Aalter, triggering reroutes via Deinze and Lichtervelde and bus replacements, with operators warning of delays until services could safely resume later in the afternoon period
Initially, train speeds were restricted to 20 km/h over a 1.5-kilometre stretch as an interim measure. However, after further assessments, railway officials decided to halt all train operations between Bruges and Ostend until the asbestos is fully removed
The infrastructure manager, Infrabel, will be undertaking critical maintenance and renewal work on various railway components during the interruption. This includes extensive repairs on the switches at Gembloux station, level crossings, and train detection devices along the tracks
