Belgian police have launched a 24-hour national speed control marathon, combining local and federal efforts to detect speeding and raise awareness about road safety, following alarming figures from the previous campaign earlier this year
According to Brussels Airport spokesperson Ihsane Chioua Lekhli, the queues began forming at around 09:30 and have steadily grown throughout the day. By 15:00, the estimated waiting time was still around an hour, although the situation remained fluid with no clear indication of when the delays would be resolved
The measure, revealed on Friday, follows a string of four shootings in three days, raising concerns over escalating gang violence in the area. Representatives from the six local police zones and the Brussels Federal Police Coordinator convened to assess the deteriorating security situation
Reports from the Federal Police indicate that the vehicle struck the cyclists she was escorting, resulting in serious injuries to one cyclist who is currently in a life-threatening condition. Another cyclist sustained minor injuries in the collision
Federal police confirmed the incident, which caused concern among motorists, but reassured that those adhering to speed limits would not face penalties
