The Government of Wallonia has taken a significant step in supporting its homeless population by approving a draft decree to reform day centres in the region.
Announced on Thursday, the reform aims to strengthen psycho-social support for vulnerable individuals while ensuring the financial stability of the centres.
Under the new decree, day centres can obtain official accreditation, granting them access to stable annual funding for their operations. Each accredited centre will receive €30,000 in funding during the first year, with an increase to €46,500 in the second year.
“This reform will provide these centres with the resources necessary to enhance their missions and better meet the needs of those they serve,” said Walloon Minister for Solidarity Yves Coppieters.
Addressing Women’s Needs and Large-Scale Support
The decree also includes additional financial incentives for centres focusing on specific groups and initiatives. Centres that develop targeted programs for women or host at least 50 people will be eligible for an additional €10,000 annually.
This measure acknowledges the unique challenges faced by women experiencing homelessness, including safety and access to tailored services.
With this reform, the Walloon government hopes to create a more inclusive support system that addresses the varied needs of its homeless population.
Growing Homelessness in Wallonia
According to government data, there are 14,342 homeless or roofless individuals in Wallonia. This figure underscores the urgent need for robust support systems to meet basic needs, such as food, hygiene, and safety, while also offering pathways to long-term stability.
“Day centres are a particularly essential way of meeting the basic needs of this vulnerable population,” Coppieters emphasized.
The centres act as safe havens for individuals facing homelessness, offering not only essential services but also psycho-social support to help them regain their footing.
Strengthening Services and Infrastructure
The reform reflects the government’s commitment to addressing homelessness more effectively by providing day centres with the tools to operate sustainably. Stable funding will allow centres to plan their operations better, invest in infrastructure, and hire skilled personnel to support their missions.
