United Kingdom: Meka Whatriti MP addressed at the Operation Grapple photographic exhibition opening at the MTG in Napier. A quick dash back to HB to speak at the Operation Grapple photographic exhibition opening at the MTG in Napier.
Read Here: Full statement-Operation grapple acknowledges the service and sacrifice of well over 500 NZ Royal Navy Seamen from HMNZS Rotoiti and HMNZS Pukaki who participated in thermo-nuclear weapons tests that were conducted by the United Kingdom off Christmas Island and Malden Island between 1957 and 1958.
Their principal role was the collection of meteorological data to ensure the safety of the tests.
However for many of these veterans, the impacts of being exposed to nuclear radiation to themselves and their children is an ongoing concern for them.
Since 1998, Operation Grapple veterans have been entitled to services and support from Veterans’ Affairs. In July 2002, they received a NZ Special Services medal.
Since 2007, injuries or illnesses in Operation Grapple veterans are automatically accepted as service-related, if they have a condition which is on a list of conclusive presumed conditions for veterans exposed to nuclear radiation.
Families of veterans may also be able to access family or psychological counseling.
