Antwerp, Belgium — Sinterklaas, Belgium’s beloved gift-giving figure known for bringing joy to well-behaved children, has confirmed his eagerly awaited arrival in the country on Saturday, November 16.
This annual tradition, cherished across Belgium, marks the beginning of the festive season, as children look forward to sweets, small gifts, and Sinterklaas-themed treats leading up to his main celebration on December 6.
The festivities traditionally begin in Antwerp, where Sinterklaas will arrive by steamboat along the Scheldt River, docking at around 14:00 near the pontoon on Steenplein. Hundreds of excited children are expected to line the quays, eagerly awaiting the first glimpse of the man in red.
He will be warmly greeted by Antwerp Mayor Bart De Wever (N-VA) before embarking on a colorful procession through the city’s heart.
The parade will culminate at the Grote Markt, where Sinterklaas will address the crowd from the town hall balcony. In his speech, he will make his long-anticipated announcement on whether the children of Belgium have been well-behaved this year.
This year’s arrival festivities can also be enjoyed live on VRT 1, Ketnet, and VRT MAX, making it accessible to families across Belgium who cannot attend in person.
Belgian Children Prepare for Sinterklaas
While Sinterklaas is celebrated on December 6, his early arrival each November stirs up excitement and joy throughout the country.
Belgian children who have been on their best behavior look forward to waking up to gifts, marzipan, and the traditional treats of speculoos cookies, chocolate figures, coins, and tangerines.
The character, celebrated as “de Sint” in Flemish and “Saint Nicholas” in French-speaking parts of the country, has long been a symbol of generosity and kindness, with deep roots in Belgian culture and history.
Sinterklaas Events in Brussels
In Brussels, Sinterklaas festivities will take place closer to the December 6 celebration. On Sunday, December 1, Sinterklaas will make a special appearance at the historic Porte de Hal museum, transforming the space into his festive “castle.”
Children will be invited to sit on his grand throne, complete with a large fireplace, and will receive goodies as mementos of their visit.
Adding to the excitement, the “Sinterkluis” at Brussels-Central Station returns this year. This iconic red parcel locker allows children to send letters or drawings directly to Sinterklaas.
Each child who places a letter in the locker will receive a personalized response and a small treat, bringing the magical connection with Sinterklaas to life.
On December 6, the celebrations culminate in Brussels with Manneken Pis, the city’s beloved statue, dressed in the traditional garb of Sinterklaas.
Various events are also typically held to mark this day, bringing the tradition to life for locals and visitors alike.
A Heartwarming Belgian Tradition
The arrival of Sinterklaas is more than a festive event; it’s a time-honored tradition that unites Belgian families and communities.
Each year, the saintly figure’s procession through Antwerp and his appearances across Belgium create lasting memories, with children eagerly awaiting the next year’s festivities.
As Sinterklaas makes his way through the country, the warmth of his presence reminds all of the importance of kindness, generosity, and a touch of holiday magic.
