Muzaffargarh: A man from Rampur, identified as Muhammad Safdar died on Tuesday from suspected police brutality while being illegally detained at the Merwala check-post within the Jatoi Police Station’s jurisdiction Muzaffargarh.
Following the incident, six police officers, including a sub-inspector, were charged with murder and suspended from their duties. Although Safdar was detained by the Jatoi police five days prior, his arrest was not officially recorded. His body was discovered hanging in the check-posts lock-up the next morning.
According to Safdar’s relatives, the police allegedly inflicted severe torture on him during the interrogation, resulting in his death. The body was moved to a hospital for a post-mortem examination. The police, on the other hand, asserted that Safdar took his own life by hanging himself and that he was in custody for a robbery charge.
The family of the deceased lodged a complaint, leading to a murder case being registered against the suspected police officers.
DPO Syed Raza Safdar Kazmi suspended Sub-Inspector Imam Bakhsh Naveed and five other police officials from their duties. He also established a committee to investigate the incident and stated that appropriate measures would be taken against the officers if the torture allegations were verified.
AIG South Punjab Maqsoodul Hasan requested a report from RPO Sajjad Hussain to conduct an inquiry.
In another incident, fraudsters duped a businessman of Rs. 0.8 million by presenting a fake USD 1 million bill.
Police officials stated that Arshad Taqi, who owns a filling station in the Mahmood Kot area of Kot Addu, reported that three individuals named Aamir Ahmed, Abdul Razzaq, and Juma Khan visited his petrol pump. The suspects presented a 1 million USD currency bill along with supporting documents and informed Taqi that the bill was worth Rs. 280 million.
They offered to sell the bill for Rs. 100 million, and Taqi was deceived into giving them an initial payment of Rs. 0.8 million. Afterwards, Taqi discovered that the bill was counterfeit, and he lodged a complaint against the three suspects, leading to a case being registered against them.
