An increasing proportion of Belgium’s working population is taking on a second job, with the latest figures from Statbel, the Belgian statistics bureau, revealing that 278,503 people had multiple jobs in 2024.
This accounts for approximately 5.5% of the workforce, marking a continued rise in job duality compared to previous years.
The new data, released on Wednesday, shows a modest increase from 2023, when 259,903 people, or 5.2% of the working population, were employed in more than one job.
Over the past two decades, the trend has become even more pronounced. In 2000, only 3.8% of Belgian workers held a second job, highlighting a steady growth in work commitments beyond a primary employment role.
Equal Proportions Among Men and Women
While the labor market has historically shown differences between male and female employment patterns, the proportion of men and women taking on a second job has now reached parity.
In 2000, 4.3% of working men had a secondary job, compared to just 3.0% of working women. Today, both genders stand at an equal 5.5%, demonstrating a shift in employment dynamics where women are increasingly engaging in multiple work roles.
Age and Education Influence Second Job Trends
The likelihood of having a second job varies by age, with individuals between 25 and 49 years old being the most likely to juggle multiple work commitments.
In this demographic, 6.0% are employed in two jobs. Younger workers, aged 15 to 24, also show significant engagement, with 4.3% reporting secondary employment. Education levels also play a role in determining who takes on additional work.
Statbel’s findings suggest that individuals with higher education are more inclined to seek a second job, possibly due to greater access to specialized skills that allow them to secure additional employment in professional sectors.
Self-Employment and Popular Sectors
Part-time self-employment remains the predominant form of secondary employment in Belgium, with 57.2% of those with a second job choosing this route.
This suggests that many workers are using their skills to generate extra income through freelancing or entrepreneurial endeavors rather than traditional employment.
The most popular sectors for second jobs include human health and social work, which accounts for 14.2% of dual-job holders.
This is followed by education at 11.9%, and accommodation and food services at 11.4%. These industries often provide flexible work arrangements, making them attractive options for those looking to supplement their income.
Economic Pressures and Changing Work Culture
The steady rise in workers taking on second jobs reflects broader economic and societal shifts. Rising living costs, inflation, and changing job market conditions may be contributing to more individuals seeking additional income streams.
Meanwhile, the gig economy and remote work opportunities have made it easier than ever for professionals to engage in multiple jobs.
As Belgium’s workforce continues to evolve, the trend of second jobs is expected to persist, with more individuals balancing multiple roles to secure financial stability or pursue entrepreneurial aspirations.
