MEP Brando Benifei agreed with the many citizens who were outraged by the choice of the municipal administration of Petilia Policastro to display a funeral manifesto expressing closeness to the family of Rosario Curcio, one of the responsible for the brutal murder of Lea Garofalo and it is unacceptable and offensive.
Through the update, he expressed, “Lea Garofalo was a brave woman who fought against ‘ndrangheta and was killed for it. Her memory deserves respect, not support, from the Institutions of those who stained our society.”
According to the sources, Lea Garofalo was an Italian justice associate and a victim of the ‘Ndrangheta, a prominent Italian Mafia-type organized crime syndicate based in the peninsular region of Calabria and dating back to the 18th century.
Originally, it is believed to have been dissolved in acid, she was murdered and her body burned.
As per the reports, Lea’s is a story of courage and hope. The courage to rebel against the rules of the ‘ndrangheta family into which she had been born and leave her mafioso partner Carlo Cosco to seek a better life, if not for herself, but for their young daughter Denise and hope because of her sacrifice that she showed that for breaking the mafia code of silence.
Additionally, Lea’s story ended brutally on 24 November 2009 with her murder in a plot orchestrated by Cosco as much in revenge for the ‘dishonour’ of being abandoned because she had broken ranks.
However, the fact that testimony provided by Denise against her father following her mother’s disappearance (Lea’s remains only came to light in 2013 as a result of evidence emerging at trial) should have led to his life imprisonment and is a source of inspiration for all.
One of the Italy social media users, Domenica Patrizia Morano, agreed with the words of MEP Brando Benifei, took to the comment section and stated, “She was a very Strong Woman……. That’s why she was killed! Whoever did this will pay for the rest of their Life!”
While another social media user, Ketty Polizzi, commented, “The council should be dissolved, and the municipality commissioned for mafia infiltration”.
