Srinagar, India: The construction of Zoji La Tunnel, being carried out by Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Limite( MEIL) will be completed and delivered for the service of the citizens by December 2026. The foundation stone of the project was laid by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, back in May 2018.
The construction company MEIL, in its latest release , stated that the construction of the Zoji La Tunnel is being carried on in full swing and the company will try to deliver the project before December 2026.
As per the company briefing, the single-tube Zoji La Tunnel which, extends from Ganderbal district of central Kashmir to Minimarg in Drass town of Kargil district of Ladakh , covers a thirteen kilometres long stretch.
The tunnel project is 9.5m wide and 7.57m high, horseshoe-shaped single tube and 2-lane road tunnel. Also, the project includes two small tunnels, named Nilgrar 1 and Nilgrar 2, which has been completed as of April 10,2023.
At the same time, the construction of the tunnel would be completed using the New Australian tunnelling method. Moreover, it will be facilitated with CCTV cameras and radio control and uninterrupted supply of power. Appropriate ventilation would also be ensured inside the tunnel.
The current progress includes the completion of excavation of 5 kilometres stretch from the total of thirteen kilometres. Also, three ventilation shafts are being constructed and progressing ahead smoothly, stated the release.
The company has been working at a rapid pace, despite the unfavourable weather conditions as it aims to deliver the Asiaโs longest tunnel road by December 2026. Once the project is completed,it will enhance the all-weather safe connectivity between Srinagar, Dras, Kargil and Leh regions
