Thousands of 18-year-olds across Europe will soon have the opportunity to explore the continent free of charge, thanks to the latest round of the European Commission’s DiscoverEU travel initiative.
Announced on Wednesday, the programme will distribute nearly 36,000 rail passes to successful applicants, granting them the chance to travel across Europe by train for up to 30 days between 1 July 2025 and 30 September 2026.
The initiative is part of a broader effort by the EU to promote cultural exchange, sustainability, and European identity among the youth.
“DiscoverEU opens the door to adventure, learning, and unforgettable experiences,” said Glenn Micallef, Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness, Youth, Culture and Sport.
“I’m thrilled to launch the spring 2025 application round, giving thousands of young people the chance to explore Europe and its rich cultural heritage, expand your knowledge, and make lifelong memories.”
The initiative is open to young people born between 1 July 2006 and 30 June 2007, who are legal residents of any EU member state or countries associated with the Erasmus+ programme, including Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia, and Türkiye.
Applications are open now and must be submitted via the European Youth Portal by Wednesday, 16 April at 12:00 (Brussels time).
After a short quiz on the European Union and a basic eligibility check, candidates will receive instructions via email to complete their application.
Only those who click “Submit” will be considered for selection. Passes will be awarded to the top-ranking applicants until all available tickets are allocated.
Participants will have the freedom to design their own European journey or opt for themed travel routes aligned with EU priorities.
Among the featured itineraries is the Green Route, which includes award-winning Green Capitals, nature reserves, and environmentally friendly cities.
Another option is the New European Bauhaus Route, which highlights innovation, architecture, and sustainability in urban development.
Additionally, travellers will receive a discount card offering deals on transportation, accommodation, cultural attractions, food, and more across 36 European countries.
Special provisions have also been made to ensure inclusivity. Applicants with disabilities, health conditions, or fewer opportunities are eligible for extra support, while those living in remote, island, or outermost regions can benefit from additional travel arrangements.
The DiscoverEU programme has gained popularity since its inception in 2018, offering a unique way for Europe’s youth to gain firsthand experience of the continent’s diversity and shared values. It continues to be hailed as an important educational and cultural policy tool by European institutions.
