Flanders is facing a worsening water crisis, with groundwater levels and river flows continuing to decline due to a dry spring, according to figures released by the Flemish Environment Agency (Vlaamse Milieumaatschappij) on Wednesday.
The agency’s latest data shows a significant drop in water levels across the region, further exacerbating concerns about the impact of prolonged drought conditions.
As of the latest reports, 51% of monitoring sites in Flanders are showing “low to very low” groundwater levels, with the most significant declines seen in the west and north of the region.
The agency also noted that the 14-day average flow rates of non-navigable rivers continue to decrease, with 49% of monitoring stations now reporting low to very low flow rates. This is a sharp increase compared to just 32% of stations reporting similar conditions last month.
The reduced flow rates are attributed to a persistent lack of rainfall, which has led to a rainfall deficit across the region. According to the Royal Meteorological Institute (IRM), Uccle received only 20 mm of rain in April, compared to the usual 46.7 mm.
The Flemish Environment Agency’s rain gauge network has reported similar findings, noting a significant shortfall in rainfall, particularly in the western part of the region. In contrast, southern Belgium, particularly Wallonia, is experiencing relatively better conditions.
The Drought Unit of the Public Service of Wallonia has reported that water levels in navigable rivers are largely “normal,” and groundwater levels are generally higher than average.
However, the unit has issued a warning that a continued lack of rainfall in the coming weeks could further reduce flow rates in some rivers, particularly the Haute Meuse, Senne, Semois, and Viroin, which are already experiencing significantly low water levels.
The situation in Flanders has prompted calls for immediate action. The Flemish Coordination Commission Integraal has urged water managers and farmers to implement water conservation measures to mitigate the impact of the drought.
Among the suggested measures is the construction of small dams to help maintain water levels in key areas. The drought conditions are already having a noticeable effect on local agriculture, with many farmers struggling to secure sufficient water for irrigation.
The reduction in water flow in non-navigable rivers is also raising concerns about its impact on wildlife and ecosystems, particularly in areas dependent on these water sources for survival.
The Flemish Environment Agency and the Wallonian Drought Unit have both emphasized the need for ongoing monitoring and cooperation between regional authorities to manage water resources effectively.
Both regions are facing unique challenges, with Flanders dealing with rapidly depleting groundwater and river flows, while Wallonia is keeping a close eye on the potential risks to its navigable rivers in the near future.
As the drought persists, the situation is expected to remain critical, and authorities are urging residents to remain mindful of their water usage and to take steps to reduce consumption wherever possible.
