MEP Sylwia Spurek presented a draft for the first-ever European Parliament resolution concerning the health and well-being of individuals residing near farms, requested by the National Agriculture Council to withdraw the resolutions.
In the resolution, she presented well-known facts indicating farms produce harmful emissions such as dust, viruses, bacteria, and pollutants that affect the quality of air, soil, and water quality. Additionally, farms also contribute to constant noise pollution.
The National Council of Agricultural Chambers requested that MEP Sylwia Spurek retract the draft resolution once they became aware of the project.
According to KRIK, the smell is subjective, and a well-managed agricultural system should not cause excessive difficulty for the villagers. The National Council of Agricultural Chambers’ position needs to be revised as it disregards scientific evidence and the lived experiences of rural residents.
Furthermore, Visiting and speaking with people who live near farms is necessary for anyone who claims that the countryside always smells bad. These individuals face significant challenges and deserve to hear and acknowledge their experiences.
Recognizing and acknowledging the experiences of individuals facing significant challenges is important. They are on their own, against the farming industry, with significant organizational power and financial resources.
MEP Sylwia Spurek has recently called on the general public of Europe to take a moment to read both the letter from KRIR and her response in her post.
