FRANKFURT — European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde stated on Thursday that the bank cannot pre-commit to future monetary policy decisions or interest rate cuts due to significant risks and uncertainties clouding the Eurozone’s economic outlook.
Speaking at a press conference, Lagarde emphasized the need for a cautious approach, citing escalating trade tensions and substantial investment plans as key factors contributing to the unpredictable environment.
“Everywhere we turn, there are risks and uncertainties,” Lagarde remarked, underscoring the challenges facing the ECB as it navigates a fragile economic recovery.
While reaffirming the bank’s commitment to its goals, she noted that making firm promises about the direction of interest rates would be imprudent given the current volatility.
The ECB President’s remarks come as the Eurozone grapples with sluggish growth, stubbornly high inflation, and external threats.
One of the most immediate concerns highlighted by Lagarde was the impact of trade tensions, particularly in light of recent tariffs announced by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
These measures, she warned, could significantly hinder Eurozone exports and weaken the broader global economy.
“The US tariffs would reduce Eurozone growth by hindering exports and weakening the global economy,” Lagarde cautioned, pointing to the intertwined nature of global trade networks.
The ECB has previously identified trade disputes as a significant risk to the bloc’s manufacturing sector, which has already shown signs of strain. In addition to external threats, Lagarde also touched on domestic factors that could influence the Eurozone’s economic trajectory.
She noted that a substantial increase in spending on defence and infrastructure, while potentially boosting growth, could also lead to higher prices.
The ECB is currently battling inflation that remains above its 2% target, raising questions about the appropriate timing for any rate adjustments.
The role of fiscal policy in supporting growth was also a focal point of Lagarde’s comments. She referred to the hundreds of billions of euros in investments announced by Germany and the European Union this week, which include substantial funding for green energy and digital infrastructure.
However, Lagarde stressed the importance of clarity regarding the timeline and financing of these initiatives before assessing their impact on growth and inflation.
“We need to understand how this would work, the timeline, and financing, so as to draw conclusions and assess the contribution to growth and the impact on inflation,” Lagarde stated.
Analysts have interpreted her remarks as a call for greater fiscal coordination within the Eurozone to complement the ECB’s monetary policy efforts.
Market reactions to Lagarde’s cautious tone were muted, with the euro holding steady against the dollar and bond yields showing little movement.
