In a precautionary move, Depo-EI CV has issued a recall for several batches of its free-range eggs due to concerns over potential salmonella contamination.
The recall, which was announced in collaboration with the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (Afsca), advises consumers to immediately stop using the affected products.
The eggs in question are marked with the stamp code “1-BE-306401” and have use-by dates ranging from 27 January to 24 March 2025.
Afsca has urged customers to check the stamp code on their eggs and refrain from consuming any that match the listed details. Those who have purchased the affected eggs can return them to the point of sale for a full refund, according to the agency’s statement.
Salmonella is a bacterial infection that can cause severe gastrointestinal symptoms, including diarrhea, stomach cramps, and fever, typically appearing 12 to 72 hours after ingestion.
While most healthy individuals recover without treatment, the infection can pose significant risks for young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. In severe cases, salmonella can lead to dehydration or require hospitalization.
Afsca emphasized the importance of vigilance, particularly for vulnerable groups, and advised thorough cleaning of any surfaces or utensils that might have come into contact with the affected eggs.
“We urge consumers to verify their products immediately and follow the instructions provided for returns,” the agency said in a statement.
Depo-EI CV has not specified how the contamination occurred but stated that the recall was a precautionary measure to safeguard public health.
The company also assured customers that it is cooperating fully with Afsca to investigate the source of the contamination and prevent similar incidents in the future.
This recall highlights ongoing concerns about food safety and the importance of stringent monitoring and swift action when potential risks are identified.
