LEUVEN – Crime statistics in Leuven have improved for the second consecutive year, with most categories showing a decline, according to the latest figures released on Wednesday.
However, while cases of violence, theft, and traffic accidents have decreased, the city has seen a notable rise in home burglaries. According to the 2024 crime report, acts of violence in the city fell by 5.4% compared to the previous year, with 872 police reports filed.

Despite these improvements, one concerning trend has emerged: burglaries in residential areas have increased. The report indicates that 200 cases of burglary in houses were reported, marking a rise of 25 from the previous year.
The number of burglaries in apartments and studios also surged, with 113 reported cases—an increase of 45 compared to 2023.
Leuven Police Chief Jean-Paul Mouchaers attributed the rise in apartment burglaries to the modus operandi of criminals targeting multi-unit buildings.
“Once burglars gain access to an apartment block, they often do not limit themselves to just one apartment,” Mouchaers stated. “However, with a total of approximately 80,000 homes and apartments in Leuven, the absolute numbers remain relatively low.”

The Leuven police have reassured residents that efforts to curb burglaries are being intensified. Increased patrols in residential areas and enhanced surveillance around apartment buildings have been implemented.
