Brussels’ Jette station witnessed an unusual incident on Wednesday evening when a vehicle mistakenly drove into the pedestrian entrance, becoming trapped on a set of stairs leading to an underground tunnel.
The incident, which occurred at around 20:30, left the car hanging precariously with its front wheels suspended over the stairs, Sudinfo reports.
According to preliminary information, the driver likely mistook the entrance for a ramp leading to the station’s parking area. The car drove through the square in front of the station before partially descending the stairs, where it ultimately became lodged.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported. However, due to the precarious position of the vehicle, a tow truck was required to remove it safely.
Concerns Over Station Accessibility
Jette station officials have since requested that the local authorities install clearer signage to prevent such incidents in the future.
“The layout of the entrance may be confusing for some drivers, especially at night,” a station representative reportedly said. “Proper signage is necessary to prevent similar accidents.”
Compounding concerns, the pedestrian stairs where the vehicle became trapped are currently the only access point for passengers using the station, as its elevators have been out of service for several months. This has raised accessibility issues, particularly for elderly passengers and those with mobility impairments.
“People with strollers, luggage, or disabilities already struggle with access due to the lack of a working elevator,” a local commuter told Sudinfo. “An incident like this only highlights how urgent it is to improve the station’s infrastructure.”
Avoiding Future Incidents
While such accidents are rare, confusion over parking entrances and station layouts is not uncommon, particularly in areas where car and pedestrian pathways intersect.
Local residents and commuters hope that authorities will take swift action to prevent further mishaps. In the meantime, Jette station remains operational, with officials assuring passengers that the incident did not cause any structural damage to the pedestrian tunnel or its access routes.
