The holiday spirit has officially arrived in Brussels as the city’s towering Christmas tree makes its grand debut at the historic Grand Place. Standing an impressive 20 meters tall, this year’s tree is not just a symbol of the festive season, but also a testament to generosity and solidarity.
Sourced from a private garden in Rixensart, Wallonia, the 32-year-old tree was becoming too large for its surroundings, posing a potential risk to the owner’s property and the safety of those nearby. In an unexpected yet heartwarming turn of events, the retired Belgian couple who owned the tree offered it to the city, allowing it to live out its remaining years in the heart of Brussels.
Adelaïde de Patoul, Public Relations Coordinator for Brussels Major Events, shared the details with The Brussels Times: “The owners were eager to see their tree go on to inspire others in a more public space. We are incredibly grateful for their generosity.”
The operation to transport the tree to the Grand Place began early Wednesday morning, with a team that included Belgian police officers, the City of Brussels, and the tree nursery company, Inter-Arbo. After being carefully cut down and stored overnight, the tree was driven to the iconic square in the early hours of Thursday, 21 November.
However, the festive display won’t be fully revealed until the inauguration on Friday, 29 November, which marks the opening of the city’s renowned Christmas market, Winter Wonders. Visitors can expect a dazzling sight, but this year’s tree will hold an added significance beyond its beauty.
In collaboration with Make-A-Wish Belgium, the tree will have a “solidarity touch.” The charity, which grants wishes to terminally or severely ill children, will partner with famous Belgians who will sign some of the tree’s decorations. These signed ornaments will later be auctioned off to raise funds for the organization, bringing a meaningful aspect to the seasonal festivities.
To ensure that the joy of the tree can be shared beyond Brussels, the City of Brussels has also set up a livestream, so anyone, near or far, can enjoy the beauty of the tree from the comfort of their home. Whether in person or online, the Christmas tree will undoubtedly bring cheer to all who behold it.
As the countdown to Winter Wonders continues, Brussels has set the stage for a magical holiday season, with the Grand Place tree standing as a beacon of festive spirit, community, and compassion.
