BRUSSELS — A significant drug bust took place last week in Koekelberg, a district in Brussels, when local police seized a substantial amount of illicit substances, including 493 ecstasy pills.
The operation followed the suspicious behaviour of a man, who was ultimately stopped by officers on Rue Emile Bossaert.
The arrest took place last Friday when officers noticed the man driving nervously and watching them closely. The patrol team decided to follow him before pulling him over for questioning.
According to the Brussels Public Prosecutor’s Office, the man appeared hesitant when asked if he was carrying any illegal items. After some reluctance, he admitted to having a packet of cannabis on his person.
A subsequent body search confirmed his confession, but the discovery didn’t end there. Investigating officers conducted a house search, which uncovered a significant stash of illegal drugs and related items.
Alongside the 493 ecstasy pills, they found a 22.52-gram block of cocaine, five packets of cocaine, a small amount of cannabis, and a range of drug-related paraphernalia.
The items included a precision scale, packaging materials for drugs, and a sum of €6,450 in cash, as well as two smartphones.
After the discovery, the suspect was brought to the prosecutor’s office for further questioning. While the full details of his involvement remain under investigation, the individual was released under conditions by an investigating judge.
This seizure is part of ongoing efforts by the Brussels West local police to tackle drug trafficking and illegal substance distribution in the city.
Ecstasy pills, often associated with rave and party scenes, are a popular illegal drug, and the quantity found suggests possible distribution activities.
Authorities are still piecing together the full scope of the operation and investigating the potential connections to broader criminal networks in Brussels and beyond.
The presence of the precision scale and packaging materials suggests that the drugs were not for personal use, but rather intended for resale.
The man’s release under conditions means he will be subject to further scrutiny, and the investigation continues. Brussels authorities have not released additional details on the suspect’s identity or previous criminal background.
In a statement, the Brussels Public Prosecutor’s Office emphasized the importance of combating illegal drug distribution, noting the ongoing vigilance of local police in responding to such activities.
They reminded residents of the potential dangers posed by drug trafficking, particularly the risk it poses to local communities and public safety.
The case highlights the efforts of law enforcement to tackle illegal substances and protect citizens from the hazards associated with drug abuse.
While the investigation is ongoing, authorities are urging anyone with information related to the case to come forward and assist in their inquiries.
