Brussels Airport, Belgium’s largest and busiest airport, is set to close one of its main runways for renovation throughout the summer holiday season, a move that could lead to flight delays during peak travel months.
Runway 07R/25L will be out of service from July 12 to August 27, as part of extensive maintenance work, according to an announcement by the airport and air traffic controller Skeyes.
This will impact flight operations significantly, as no planes will be able to land or take off from the runway during this period.
A spokesperson for Brussels Airport confirmed to The Brussels Times that the closure will also affect another runway for a short period.
“As runway 07R/25L intersects with runway 01/19, both runways will be closed to air traffic between August 2 and 12. During this period, only runway 07L/25R will be operational,” the spokesperson stated.
Potential for Delays Amid Busy Travel Period
With fewer runways available, passengers could experience delays, especially during peak hours. However, the airport assured that every effort will be made to minimize disruptions to travel plans.
“We will work to limit the impact of these renovation works as much as possible, but there may be delays on certain flights during busy periods,” the spokesperson added.
The summer months are among the busiest travel periods at Brussels Airport, with thousands of passengers passing through daily.
While travelers may face inconvenience, airport authorities emphasize that the renovations are necessary for safety and operational efficiency.
Essential Safety Upgrades
The planned maintenance will include the resurfacing of the runway with new asphalt, the installation of upgraded lighting systems, and improvements to runway drainage. These enhancements aim to ensure better durability and safety for aircraft landings and takeoffs.
Runway 07R/25L plays a crucial role in airport operations, as it is primarily used for landings. More than half of all aircraft arriving at Brussels Airport in 2023 used this runway, particularly for flights coming from the east.
The selection of active runways is managed by Skeyes, Belgium’s air traffic service provider. Decisions are based on runway availability and weather conditions, prioritizing the safety of air navigation.
Not the First Runway Closure
Temporary runway closures for maintenance are not uncommon at Brussels Airport. Similar construction works took place just last month, and in August 2023, runway 01/19 was closed for nearly a month for upgrades.
These works are part of an ongoing effort to maintain and modernize airport infrastructure, ensuring compliance with international aviation standards.
